Engadine Pedestrian Safety

Update on the Investigation into the intersection of Caldarra Avenue and the Old Princes Highway

5 August 2024

Following months of correspondence with Sutherland Shire Council, I am pleased to advise that the Council has now agreed to undertake a Traffic Facilities Upgrade in the 2024/2025 financial year (ie by 30 June 2025).

This will include an upgrade of the existing kerb ramps, a raised threshold in Caldarra Avenue and speed cushions on all approaches to the intersection of Caldarra Avenue and Old Princes Highway, Engadine.

A copy of Council’s letter is here.

You will see that the Council’s Traffic Committee is also investigating raised pedestrian crossings in and around this Intersection.  I will keep monitoring this matter for the safety of pedestrians in Engadine.

I am delighted to have been able to obtain a successful outcome for the residents, local businesses and the local community in Engadine.

Request for and update on the Investigation into the intersection of Caldarra Avenue and the Old Princes Highway

In January, I wrote to Sutherland Shire Council requesting an investigation into the intersection of Caldarra Avenue and Old Princes Highway in Engadine.

In Council's response they said that Council is investigating pedestrian and road safety at the intersection of Caldarra Avenue and Princes Highway, addressing concerns such as pedestrian safety and a recent car crash. An initial site assessment shows the roundabout is outdated but in satisfactory condition, with one road sign set to be renewed.

Data collection for the investigation includes:

  • Current upgrade plans

  • Results of previous investigations

  • Crash history

  • Pedestrian count data

  • Traffic speed, volume, and turning data

  • Future infrastructure options will be limited by existing road widths and surrounding buildings. After the assessment, proposed changes will be discussed with the Sutherland Traffic and Traffic Safety Committee.

Following earlier communication, the project was expected to reach the design stage in 2022/2023 and construction in the next financial year, depending on priorities. Council officers are also addressing difficulties for pedestrians and concerns from local business operators. A report will be provided to the Traffic Committee, which will give better clarity on the timing of future works.

I have written to Sutherland Shire Council again requesting an update on their investigation and when they plan to undertake works at the intersection, here
