World Environment Day 2023 - School Speech Competition
To celebrate World Environment Day (WED) I’m running a local school’s speech writing competition focussed on this year’s official theme of Solutions to Plastic Pollution. Students in years 5-6 and years 7-8 at schools in the Federal Electorate of Hughes are invited to enter, and I’d appreciate you encouraging your students to take part.
SPEECH TOPIC
To be part of the competition, students need to answer two questions in their speeches:
What is your solution for Beating Plastic Pollution? and,
Why do you think protecting the environment is important?
Students can learn more about World Environment Day, and this year’s theme of Solutions to Plastic Pollution on the official WED website here: https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
TO ENTER
Write a 250-300 word speech that addresses the two questions above. Speeches must be original and written by each entrant - use of AI tools is not permitted.
Submit your speech and complete the competition entry form by midnight 1 September 2023.
WINNERS & PRIZES
A local judging panel will help me select the winning entries and runners up from each of the two age groups.
The two winning speeches will be credited to the student and read out by me as a speech in the Parliament of Australia. Due to the timing of speeches in Parliament the 300 word limit must be strictly adhered to. All speeches in the Parliamentary Chamber become part of the Hansard, which is the official record for the Parliament and becomes part of our history.
I would be very grateful if you could support this competition and share the information with your students, parents and teachers. Please contact my office if you require any extra information.
